Today was full of performance.
I'm lucky enough to know a lot of people who are brave and passionate enough to get up on stages in front of audiences and do the things that they like to do.
My day began with Wellfarewell, a play that follows the life of Esmerelda, a downtrodden 80-year old retired Shakespearean actress, who finds the criminal justice system to be a worthy alternative to scraping by to feed herself and pay her rent on a paltry artist's pension. I came to see the play because my cousins' grandfather Art King (an awesome and talented human being) played a few small roles, but was happy to walk away having experienced a rarity in the artistic realm: fiction that spotlights the life of someone in their "golden years." Those of us who don't interact with the elderly on a regular basis could stand to see them portrayed in fiction a little more, especially considering the mass quantity of fiction that most people consume these days. 80-year olds can be sassy, crude, and passionate, and its not only the stories of their youth that are worthy of our attention.
Later I was treated to amazing food, comedy, and music.
The East Indian Company has a comedy night called Eat Your Words on the first Saturday of every month, and this month my funnyman brother Josh was a part of it. Pictured here is Tash Naved, the event's coordinator and one of the night's comics (along with five other hilarious humans). Josh, I am so proud of you. You have not only worked really hard to improve your material, stage presence, and all that stuff, but to create a set specifically for me so that I wouldn't have to hear any repeat jokes is super sweet. You are so good! Keep at it, big bro.
After the comedy and music, a few of us went to belt out our own songs at karaoke. I got to see Gary again (THE Gary of Ottawa's Garaoke) and rap some Salt N' Peppa. All in all, it was a solid day of performance.
